LETTER

Dear SIFC parents and students

It is such an honor to be invited to lead the Academic program at SIFC, this wonderful school which was founded 17 years ago by Professor Fu, with his innovative vision to educate the young people to be deep thinkers and active learners. I have worked in excellent schools around the world, and at each, I have questioned and learned a great deal. My first Mishu in China gave me the Chinese name Fon suo方索, which he explained means “inquirer or seeker.” I am still inquiring and never tire of the privilege of being able to continuously learn and grow with joy and humility, with passion and compassion. This is the same privilege that I aim to provide every student in every school in which I have worked. This is the privilege that I, now, along with every single one of my colleagues, wish to offer to all SIFC students: to become seekers, critical thinkers, problem solvers, and contributors to China and humanity at large.

I am here today because of a High School teacher who encouraged me, saw ability in me, and made me believe in myself. My whole career has been a matter of paying that kindness forward to students and teachers around the world, while continuing my own path of learning. I would like all students to feel that this world is wondrous, that mathematics, music, art, computer programming, the writings of Lao Tzu and T. S. Eliot, the geography of the earth, and the composition of RNA are all impossibly beautiful, intricate, and magical. Instead of just driving students forward by grading them on disconnected tasks, we should be helping them to explore what really matters in our lives. Our real mission is to help students find what they love to work at for hours on end. Falling in love with one area of knowledge or creativity leads us to better appreciate all the school subjects. As a wise person once said, “There is no (external) discipline; there is only being disciplined by what we love.” My colleagues and I would like every student to love something and to feel that he or she possesses a spark of genius. All teaching begins in establishing relationships, and as Professor Fu has written, quoting Socrates, we “awaken” students.

We teachers best help students to love learning, not by telling them to repeat what we say, but by intriguing them, puzzling them and provoking them to come up with ideas we had not thought of. This is why SIFC has begun to focus on Project Based Learning, in which students don’t just focus on sections and chapters in a textbook, but instead explore larger problems and issues connected to our lives. To pose solutions to those problems, students must draw upon all the skills in textbooks, and then seek further knowledge, but then they must rise to the level of understanding, evaluating and even inventing solutions. This “modern, progressive” idea was long ago stated by Confucius: To learn without thinking is labor in vain: to think without learning is desolation. A main focus of my work will be to promote critical thinking and inquiry-based learning. In line with that I will stress frequent and varied forms of assessment so that students (and you) get extensive, timely feedback on progress. Through assessment, we educators also learn about how successfully we are teaching!

An important area of work for me will be to ensure that our school is a community. We will begin the new year with whole school discussions, with input from you, students, and teachers, of what constitutes good teaching and what constitutes a successful learner. When we reach essential agreements on these issues, we will be obligated to live by them. As in every school I work in, I will ask the students what the important rules are, and they will know exactly what they are (though my colleagues and I might want to add a few). Students, our goal is to evoke from you your unique voice that will make you active and responsible young adults, who are part of a community that you help create and enhance each day. A school must have a heart, but we must also be allowed to have clear expectations for each other. And we have a moral obligation to live up to those expectations.

In line with expectations there will be a clear red line on important issues such as campus conduct, respect for others, and working hard. When we know fully that we are part of a community, we tend to contribute positively. Based on what I learned as a boarding school Headmaster in Switzerland and on best practices internationally, I am going to treat our young people with respect and dignity and encourage them to rise to those expectations in their daily lives. Students will contribute in leadership roles such as School Council, Dormitory Proctors and Leaders to their younger peers, as well as members of the dining committee, the teaching and learning committee, and the social committee. I want to hear their voices on how things work and what can help them learn better. I want to seek ways to offer students privileges and choices for great work and behavior.

Parents, I will be calling upon you to work in partnership with us and to tell us whenever you have questions or concerns. We will make ourselves accessible to you, and you will know clearly that we are on your side. But our first obligation is to our young students. We will counsel and assist you and your child. But we will not take over or encourage you to take over the responsibilities that the young person should be taking on himself/herself as they grow. Together, we can help them become self -reliant people ready to go out into the world.

I have already begun work in earnest and look forward to a lot of complex but extremely fulfilling work in helping SIFC evolve to its next level. I look forward to meeting you all soon.

With warm regards,

Alfonso J. Orsini Ed.D
